Welcome to the Manchester Fly Facility
Looking for a versatile model system to test your ideas on? Why not try the fruit fly – the insect behind 7 Nobel laureates in Physiology & Medicine? Don’t feel daunted! We can support you and help kick-start your fly research!
Humans and flies share many common genes and evolutionary conserved biology.
What we offer
The Manchester Fly Facility was set up with funding from the Wellcome Trust and The University of Manchester to support scientific research using the genetic invertebrate model organisms Drosophila melanogaster, also known as fruit fly or vinegar fly. The services we offer include:
- infrastructure and services
- training (also for groups)
- opportunities for collaboration
We also have gathered substantial expertise in the area of science communication and public outreach promoting the awareness of Drosophila as an important pillar in the process of scientific discovery. Through this, we have generated an ample portfolio of resources for science fairs and schools (see also our droso4schools website), and we are happy to share these with you. Furthermore, we have developed this website into a one-stop-shop for Drosophila-related science communication resources, which is complementary to FlyBase and Interactive Fly and can be found under the various tabs in the “For the Public” area of this website. We are happy to share our expertise and collaborate with you. So, please, don’t hesitate to contact us.
